Surgical Centre 1970 was a historical mark for Clínica São Vicente. During nine months of refurbishment, the institution became a very modern hospital for its time. That year, among others, the four room surgical centre was created, including the sterilization centre and the changing rooms. The surgical activities followed, developed by renowned physicians such as Antonio Luiz Medina, Ivan Lemgruber and Fernando Paulino, very demanding physicians regarding technical conditions and professional ethics.
Today, the Clínica São Vicente Surgical Centre conducts all types of interventions, from the most complex made by some of the greatest surgeons in Brazil. Professionals including nurses, technical and administrative staff and the hotel staff take rounds 24 hours per day in the Surgical Centre. There are five rooms with anaesthesia carts, complete monitoring systems (oximetry, electrocardiograms, non-invasive pressure, invasive pressure modules, telethermometer, nerve stimulator and BIS monitors), surgical tables, auxiliary tables, light focus and electrical scalpel. Approximately 300 surgeries are conducted by month, both elective and emergency.
The Surgical Centre complex also includes a pharmacy and a Materials and Sterilization Centre - CME.
The operating rooms are booked directly by the physicians and the Surgical Centre Staff using a spreadsheet that registers all activities in the sector for the next two to three months. According to the characteristics of each surgery, the staff defines which is the most appropriate room and organizes all the basic materials and those that are specific for each type of surgery.
Materials and sterilization Centre - CME All the materials that are taken to and from surgeries are controlled in the CME. After washing the equipment, the CME wraps and sterilizes the materials in sterilization equipment know as autoclaves (steam sterilization) or sterrad (hydrogen peroxide sterilization). The materials are then stored in an appropriate location to be reused.
Clínica São Vicente complies with international sterilization guidelines. In November 2006 we became the second hospital in Rio de Janeiro and the first in the South Zone to receive the Gold Certificate of the 3M Sterilization Monitoring Certification Program that guarantees we are at the same level in this aspect as the main hospitals of the world.
