Intensive Care Unit
ICU is a lively place. Despite being contrary to good sense, that is the vision of those who work in the Intensive Care Centre at Clínica São Vicente, which includes two units (UTI1 and UTI2).

This site which is where the more severe cases are attended to show us that stress, fear, doubts and concerns usually accompany the patients and their family. At Clínica São Vicente, these issues are directly linked to the treatment, which has conventionally been called HUMANIZATION. The staff is prepared to practice medical attention with its true grandiosity: to go beyond treating the disease, understanding the needs and anguishes the family has and offering constant psychological support.

A new ICU concept
Clínica São Vicente was one of the first hospitals in Rio de Janeiro to implement Intensive Care services, in 1984. As it was one of the pioneer hospitals in cardiac surgery in Rio de Janeiro, in 1993 it re-opened the ICU focused on cardiology, with specialized professionals and state of the art infra-structure.

In October 2005, Clínica São Vicente opened UTI2 that became the first Intensive Care Unit in Rio de Janeiro focused on neurology/neurosurgery and pneumology. The unit is equipped with non-invasive ventilation equipment – masks that allow the patient to remain stable without being intubated.

Suites in UTI2
This new ICU has another differential: seven private suites that allow one accompanying person per room, during all the recovery period, without any risk for the patient. As in all closed units, a central telemetry monitoring system receives the vital signs from the patients and is constantly observed by the nursing and medical staff. The accompanying person receives instructions from the staff on how to behave in different situations.

The close relationship between family members and the healthcare professional staff helps to create bondage. The family comes closer to the diagnosis, the treatment and prognosis. Although indexes do not exist to measure the results of this activity, it has changed – to better – the way in which people deal with ICU hospitalization. I.
